According to police, the vehicle was travelling from Karnal in Haryana to Haridwar, Uttarakhand, to immerse the ashes of Mahendra Juneja, a family member who had passed away from cancer three days earlier.

The deceased have been identified as Mahendra’s wife Monika (40), son Piyush (19), sisters Anju and Mohini, brother-in-law Rajendra, and the driver Shiva. Another passenger, Hardik, sustained serious injuries and was referred to a higher medical centre after initial treatment at Baghra CHC.
The impact of the collision was severe. Eyewitnesses described the scene as horrifying, with locals rushing to rescue the victims by breaking open the car doors.
Rajesh Kumar, a dhaba owner who witnessed the accident, said the truck was parked on the roadside of the highway when the high-speed SUV collided with it from behind.
“The car was completely mangled. We broke the doors to pull out the passengers and immediately called the police and ambulance,” he said.
All the deceased were residents of Faridpur in Karnal. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem, and the victims’ relatives have been informed. An investigation into the accident is underway.
